NO CHEERS FOR HITLER
GERMAN APATHY
SCENE OUTSIDE REICHSTAG
(Daventry Broadcast.) LONDON, Today. A striking illustration of the German people's apathy about the war is reported by a special correspondent who has arrived at Amsterdam from Berlin. The ' correspondent • was outside the Chancellery after Herr Hitler announced the invasion of Poland, and his is the first uncensored story from Germany. ' . - -■""■■; "I stood outside the Chancellery after Hitler had told the Reichstag that German troops were advancing into Poland," he said. "A small window leading on to the balcony was open, an indication that Hitler might make an appearance if cheered. "There was a smali group of people in the square, and three companies of Storm Troopers and police. The Storm Troopers raised the cry, 'We'want our Fuhrer,' which is part of the ritual. There was no response from the meagre crowd of five or six hundred, who gazed stolidly at the window. Slowly, the window was closed. Cameramen who had been waiting to get pictures of the Fuhrer acclaimed by his people moved off without theirpictures, and the guards slowly dispersed."
