DAY IN PARLIAMENT

CLEARING THE DECKS

Good use was made of the daylight sitting of the House of Representatives yesterday to put through a number of Bills on the Order Paper, and the result was that the House rose at 4.55 p.m. with the decks practically cleared for the war finance legislation which the Government hopes to bring down next Tuesday. Replying to the Leader of the Opposition (the Hon. A. Hamilton), the Acting Prime Minister (the Hon. P. Fraser) said that members could arrange amongst themselves whether the proposals were also to be debated on Tuesday evening. Within a few minutes of. the House meeting in the morning approval was given to several technical amendments which had been made to the Meat Bill by the Legislative Council. Next in order of passing were the Patents, Designs, and Trade-marks Amendment Bill, the Reserves and Other Lands Disposal Bill, the Native Purposes Bill, the Wage- Protection and Contractors Liens Bill, and the Local Legislation Bill. During the afternoon the Pharmacy Bill, which was introduced in a new form, ami the Rural Housing Bill came before the House, and these were the only two public Bills remaining on the Order Paper at the rising of the House.
