Pleasant weather prevailed for the t Wellington. Trotting Club's Spring, Meeting at Hutt Park today* the misty conditions and light rain of yesterday having broken overnight. The rain, had had practically no material effect! on the track, and the going was in j splendid order. ' , Despite the counter attractions, there was quite a ,large crowd at t&e Park, and-it was a^happy augury towards a successful season. Holmes, Christchurch.) After a series of disappointments, Mackscot opened his winning account in the Sharpe Handicap, in which ne ;as in front from start to finish. Over the greater portion of the trip he was accompanied by the favourite Wishful on his outer, but in the straight he ran away from this rival and he stuck on gamely to his task to* hold off challenges from Excel, Scotty Direct,' and Neon Oro, who were next after the -leaders all the way, and finished strongly, with Scottie Direct doing best of them right at the death. Berry, Christchurch.) ; The Sir Thomas Wilford Memorial Handicap was a splendid contest, and for the third time in succession during the day the horse who set out to make the running stayed there to the finish. Great Jewel, living, up to the promise he gave at Addington recently, was satisfied to- remain just in front of the others-till the final furlong, when he dashed away and scored decisively. Marlene ran round to the leaders oa the turn, but was outstayed by Wind^ sor Lass, who had the poorest run in j the race, and had to drop back to last at the two furlongs to get out. Red Pigeon, a close second to the straight, I tired into fourth. Bill B was prominent for a time after a bad break at the start.
