LOWRY BAY BUSH
NEW SCENIC RESERVE
PURCHASE FROM COMPANY/
The acquisition by the Crown and the Hutt County Council of an area of approximately 265 acres at Lowry Bay at present owned by the Lowry BayEstate Co., Ltd., is authorised by an additional clause to the local Legislation Bill introduced. in the House of, Representatives last night. A good deal of the area is in bush, which it is desired to preserve as an asset to Wellington. The company has offered to sell the. whole of the 265 acres for the sum of £2000, which is slightly below the ' amount of the Government valuation. The Hutt County Council has agreed; to find £1250 towards the purchase price, and the Department of Land*and Survey will find the balance out. of scenic funds. The company has agreed to accept the council's share in the form of 12 annual instalments, and will not require any payment by way of interest. Part of the .area not under bush is required by the council, for county purposes. , It is proposed to complete the acquisition of the land next year by means of a transfer of the whole area to the Crown. Tha bush area Will then be defined and made a scenic reserve, and control will be vested in the council under the provisions of section 13 of the Scenery Preservation Act, 1908. The remainder will be vested in the council by Order in Council. The clause gives authority- for the council to pay its share of the price by instalments and provides also for the vesting of the non-scenic area in the local body.
