RESPONSE OF EMPIRE
TRIBUTES IN LORDS
1914 THE ONLY PRECEDENT
(Received September 22, 1 p.m.) i LONDON, September 21. j The Foreign Secretary, Lord Halifax, j in the House of Lords, said: "Our efforts are being reinforced by the re- J sponse from the Dominions. I am cer- ! tain the great strength of Britain in every field will gradually be organised to make her weight more and more felt." Viscount Maugham said that if Herr Hitler had the courage to tell the Germans of the determination of the British Empire and of the action which the Dominions had taken it would have a great effect on the determination of his coerced people to wage war for the purpose of aggrandising Herr Hitler himself. The Dominions were not influenced by fear or by the hope of material advantage. There was no example in history so striking and moving as the action of the Dominions unless it was their own example in 1914.
