BUILDING IN TE ARO
(To the Editor.) j Sir,—Now that we have expended a tremendous-sum upon the creation of an exhibition city and are about to j welcome thousands of visitors to admire our capital, a word about Te Aro Flat would not be amiss. The last ten years has seen the erection at Lower Hutt and other suburbs of numerous "garden factories." I have also opted recently model factories being built in some of the city suburbs. Te Aro Flat has been tormany years classified and reserved by the Wellington City Council as an "industrial and brick area" By this I understand the area is reserved for the erection of business and factory premises. It is many years now since one firm set a magnificent example by clearing off IWI b'lo'As of old buildinfs and erecting a model factory. How is it that no i other manufacturing concern has foli lowed suit? Has the Wellington City i Council ever given encouragement to firms to build in place of slums? While the drab dwellings in the old city area yearly grow more dilapitated and unsightly, modern garden factories are going up on land away from the city, which will be urgentlyrequired in.the future for housing. Is this modern town planning?—l am. etc., CIVIC.
