DAY IN PARLIAMENT

DEBATE ON LAND TENURE

Yesterday in the House of Representatives was another day of routine business and resulted in further substantial reduction of the size of the Order Paper, pending the introduction of the eagerly awaited war finance legislation. This, the Acting Prime Minister (the Hon. P. Fraser) stated definitely, would make its appearance next Tuesday, and tie also made it plain that the Government expected members generally to dispose of other business in the meantime. All the afternoon and part of the evening were devoted to further consideration of the Small Farms Amendment Bill, which had taken up much more of the time of the House than its importance in the present circumstances seemed to warrant and which was finally passed after two divisions had been called for by the Opposition on the question of leasehold or freehold tenure. The rest of the evening was taken up with the remaining stages of the Agricultural Emergency Regulations Confirmation Bill and the Nurses and Midwives Registration Amendment Bill, both ol which were disposed of. and just before the House rose at. 10.30 p.m. two additional clauses of the Local Legislation Bill were introduced and referred to the Local Bills Committee.
