STOATS AND WEASELS
HEDGEHOGS DECLARED
WORSE
Some original opinions were expressed in a letter from the Mauriceville County Council, received at last night's meeting of the council of the Wellington Acclimatisation' Society.
It was stated that the question of the destruction of stoats and weasels had been discussed by the Mauriceville Council, which had also considered the in«rease of the hedgehog pest The council was strongly of opinion that stoats and weasels should be protected rather than destroyed, as they were the natural enemies of rabbits, which abounded in the district. It was suggested that the royalty at present paid for stoats and weasels would serve a better purpose if allocated to the destruction of hedgehogs, which were destroying, in abnormal manner, the useful bird life all over the country.
After a short discussion it was decided to refer the letter to the North Island Council of the society.
