IMPROVING TALENT

AUCKLAND'S YOUNG PACERS

Although Auckland stables may not be numerically strong in three-year-old pacers, there are several who should be very useful if their early displays are any criterion. . Two-year-olds in the north do not receive as many opportunities to race as those in the South Island, but.since the inception of the Great Northern Trotting Stakes, preceded by matinee meetings at Epsom and Hamilton, keener interest has been evinced in their early education.

In the first contest for two-year-old pacers at Epsom in 1937 the South Island representative Horse Power narrowly defeated Axminster. while the following year Contender, Davey Day, and Auto Bingen, all Auckland candidates, filled' the places. . Last February Highland Scott proved superior over two northern ypungsters in Josette and Now Then.

Josette later attracted attention by filling two third placings and she was the best of the Auckland youngsters. She is bred on splendid lines, being by David McElwyn, a son of Mr. McElwyn and grandson of Guy Arworthy, from Cyone, a fine performer by Logan

Pointer from Mavis Bingen. She is trained by F. J. Smith, who has two others of the same age in Bonniedene and Derby Huon.

Bonniedene is a smart filly by Great • Parrish from Bonnie Bingen, the dam" of Sandusky and Bonny Azure. Derby Huon is an Australian-bred colt by Robert Derby, sire of Lawn Derby, 1.59 2-5.

Now Then was another to attract attention when she finished third in the Great Northern Trotting Stakes, and his next appearance is awaited with interest. He is by Dillon Audubon, a son of Great Audubon, from an unraced Peterwah mare.
