ABSOLUTE POWERS TAKEN
EMERGENCY BILL TABLED
Extraordinary powers enabling the Government to assume control of all public and private utilities and activities in New Zealand are contained in the Emergency Regulations Bill, which was introduced in the House of Representatives last night by GovernorGeneral's- Message and read a first time. In emphasising the farreaching effect of the measure, the Acting Prime Minister (the Hon. P. Fraser) said that it was necessary and unavoidable, and that it was the Government's responsibility to see that the authority reposed in it was used not recklessly but wisely. In addition to providing extra powers, the Bill also validates the regulations already issued under the Public Safety Conservation Act, 1932, and gives them an indefinite currency.
