NEWS OF THE DAY
Jewish New Year. ' The Jewish New Year, 5700, begins! tomorrow, September 14. The Jewish calendar, being both solar and lunar, is very complicated. The New Year does not always begin on the same j date, and the number of days in the year varies. The years are numbered from the year of the Creation. Municipal Association. Authority for the incorporation of the Municipal Association of New Zealand is contained in the Municipal Association Bill, which was introduced in the House yesterday by GovernorGeneral's Message and . read a first time. The Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. W. E. Parry) explained that the Act of 1932 gave no power to the association to make its own rules, and it was found easier to bring in a new Bill than to amend the old Bill. Superannuation Levies. "Are the newspaper reports an- J nouncing the Government's intention of paying the superannuation contributions of public servants who enlist and are accepted for service, correct?" asked Mr. S. G. Holland (National, Christchurch North) in a notice of question to the Acting Prime Minister (the Hon. P. Fraser) in the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon. Mr. Holland also asked whether it was the intention of the Government to pay superannuation contributions and National Provident Fund contributions of those persons now in private employment, but who were accepted for active service, and thus place all soldiers on the same basis as far as expenditure of public moneys was concerned. Star-gazing Riflemen. Co-operation between riflemen and observatory officials is noted in the annual report of the Wellington Rifle Association, adopted at its meeting last night. On January 23, at about 10 a.m., a meteorite was observed by a number of riflemen to travel from north to south against the background provided by the hills eastward of the Seddon Range. At the request of an official of the Dominion Observatorystaff a systematic inquiry was carried out among the riflemen who were on the range at the time, and the statements collected were forwarded to the official in question.
