WELLINGTON SCHOLAR
PRESENTED TO THE QUEEN
! The story of her presentation to thu Queen at an afternoon, reception at the house of Lady Howard de Walden in London was told by Miss Winifred McQuilkan, of Dunedin, when she arrived last week in Sydney on her way back to New Zealand, after two year* at Oxford, states an exchange. Miss McQuilkan won a post-gradu-ate scholarship in Wellington, and ha» spent two years studying for a Bache» lor of Arts degree in English at Somerville College, Oxford. She said that many parties were arranged for overseas students* at Oxford and Cambridge, and at this entertainment oversea members of the Royal Air Force were also included among the guests. "It was an informal afternoon party," she said, "with a musical programme provided by Australian and New Zealand artists. The Queen, who .was dressed in black, as mourning for Queen Maude of Norway, moved about among the guests. There were about five hundred guesta and about twenty of us were introduced to her Majesty. She spoke charmingly to me, and said that she had enjoyed her visit to Australia and New Zealand, and hoped to come here again. She was particularly interested in Canada, as it was before the Royal tour of that country, and asked many questions 7 about it.".
