VICEREGAL.

This morning the Governor-General presided at a meeting of the Executive Council at Government Buildings.

Later in the morning his Excellency received the United Kingdom High Commissioner (Sir Harry Batterbee).

Her Excellency Lady Galway was present at the Wellington Harmonic Society's concert in the Town Hall last evening.

The annual meeting of the Wellington Rifle Association last night recorded with regret the deaths during the year of Sir Thomas Wilford, Lieut.Colonel W. G. Duthie, and Mr. F. H. Morgan, all of whom had been prominently connected with the move* ment.

The Hon. W. Downie Stewart and Miss Stewart arrived in Wellington from Dunedin this morning and are staying at the Waterloo Hotel.

Mr. A. W. Thompson, headmaster of the Terrace End School, Wanganui, has been appointed acting inspector to the Wanganui Education Board consequent on the death of Mr. W. J/Boden, senior inspector to the board. ,

The severe loss to bowling caused by the death of Mr. H. D. Thomson, of the Thorndon Club, was mentioned by the president, Mr. T. Lock, at- last night's meeting of the Wellington Bowling Centre. Mr. Lock also expressed regret at the loss of Mr, Thomson's brother, Mr. J. P. Thomson, of the Eastbourne Club.

The Hon. Sir R. Heaton Rhodes, M.L.C., arrived at Wellington from the south this morning.

Mr, H. D. Acland was a passenger from the south this morning.

Advice has been received in Wellington of fhe appointment of Mr. P. W. Jackson to the position of manager of the London office of the Commercial Bank of Australia. Mr. Jackson,.who is very well known in Wellington, joined the staff of the bank 17 years ago at •Christchurch, and subsequently was manager of the Hastings and Mas* terton branches before coming to Wellington as accountant. He occupied this position for four years'.before leaving for England in April on bank business, which was expected .to extend over a period of six. months.. Mr. Jackson is a comparatively young man.

The Rev.' .Dr. R. C. Gillie, who has been supplying at St. David's Presbyterian Church, Auckland, during the absence of the Rev. W. Bower Black, has decided to return to England because of the outbreak of war. He and Mrs. Gillie will leave Auckland by the Mariposa on Monday for San Francisco, and will continue from there to Eng* land.

Air Marshal Sir Robert Clarki-Hall arrived at Wellington from the south this morning.
