LOWER HUTT RATES

INCREASED COLLECTION ~

Reporting to the Borough Council last evening, the Town Clerk of Lower Hutt, Mr. B. S. Knox, stated that during the period in which a discount was given on rates paid, which ended on Monday, August 21, the sum of £55,711 14s 2d was collected as against £40,499 8s for the same period during the previous year. A feature of the collection was the huge receipt on the last day, when the sum of £17,608 was handled. Of this £11,112 came by mail, the balance of £6496 being paid in over the counter. During the month 2768 receipts were issued, 707 of which were issued on the last day. The council desired the Town Clerk to convey its appreciations to the staff on the work accomplished during the discount period.

The percentage of rates collected to rates struck was 56.48, compared with 46.79 for the same period last year.:
