GAMING CHARGES

.Fines totalling £330 were imposed by Mr. R. M. Watson, S.M..' in the Feilding Magistrate's Court yesterday when several persons admitted charges relating to the offence of b'jokmaking.
Mrs. Ella Saunders was fined £40 on a charge of keeping a common gaminghouse. According to the police she had been operating in a small way.
Albert Edward Hosken was fined £100 on a similar charge. The Magistrate said that in ordinary times the defendant would have faced gaol. Less than twelve months ago he had been fined £100 for betting, and on that occasion had been warned that a further conviction would possibly result in imprisonment. At the present juncture, however, the Court wished to avoid sending persons to gaol.
Patrick Molloy admitted a like charge and was fined £60. It was stated that in October last he had been fined £ 15 for a breach of the Act.
James Hawkesbury Johnston admitted taking bets and he was fined £30. It was stated that he was not operating in a big way.
Noel Hurdle, who was described as one of the two biggest bookmakers in Feilding, was fined £100 with a warning that the next conviction might mean -gaol.
