OFFER FROM MAORIS
PIONEER BATTALION
The desire of the Maori race to contribute to the defence of the Dominion, and the willingness of the Government to avail itself of the offer, were expressed in the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon, when the Defence Estimates were under discussion. Mr. E. T. Tirikatene (Southern Maori1), said that Maori returned soldiers.had made application for the rer-establishment of the Maori Pioneer Battalion, and for some months the returned men had expressed their desire in that respect. Many Maori young men and women were anxious to offer their services. JKEPORT TO BE OBTAINED. The Minister of Defence (the Hon. F, Jones) said that ue had been approached in regard to the matter, pnd he had promised to 'look into it and gee what could be done. * "If it is possible'to take advantage of their services we will certainly do it," he said.
