EMBASSY STAFFS
HOW EXCHANGE MADE
DUTCH ACT AS GO-BETWEEN
(Received September 6, 11.30 a.m.)
LONDON, September 5. The Ministry of Information issued an official version of the exchange of the staffs of the British and German Embassies.
"Immediately on the outbreak of war," it states, "the Foreign Office arranged for the safe departure of the German Charge d'Affaires and Ms staff, and they left London at 6 p.m. on September 4. with a view to boarding the Dutch vessel Batavier IV. However, before the vessel sailed, the British Ambassador at The Hague was advised that Germany refused to allow Sir Nevile Henderson and his staff co cross the-German-Dutch frontier until the German staff had been released from England. Britain gladly accepted a Dutch offer to act as go-between, and agreed to allow the Germans to embark on the Batavier IV on condition that they were not permitted to cross Holland until the Britishers were Teleased. The Batavier IV sailed at 11.35 p.m. on September 4. It is expected that the exchange will be made in Holland today."
