LABOUR FOR INDUSTRY

ASSURANCE GIVEN

MAINTAINING PRODUCTION

Steps would be taken immediately to evolve ways and means of seeing that every farmer needing labour to produce what the Dominion needed obtained that labour, said the Minister of Labour (the Hon.' P. C. Webb) in the House of Representatives last evening, when the vote of £2,720,000 for the Labour Department- was, being discussed.

Mr. Webb was replying to a contention by Mr. W. J. Poison (National, Stratford) that attention should be directed to the position that would arise if most of the voting men on farms joined up for military service.

"A conference will be held between representatives of labour and manufacturers for the purpose of having an economic survey made of the whole of the 'manufacturing industries of this country," said the Minister. "Members can rest assured that where consumable goods are needed we will provide the labour. We might have to take many short-cuts, but industry will be ; kept going. It is my object to co-operate 100 per cent, with those people interested in the different industries." ' -~
