FINAL TONIGHT
The foul- finalists in the New Zealand section of the Melba Bequest Scholarship elimination contest, the outstanding item on the programme of the Wellington Competition Society's 1939 festival, will sing before the judges in the Town Hall tonight. Mr. F. A. Bullock, of Christchurch, judge of the vocal section at the competitions, and Dr. Frederic J. Staton, of England, who i is visiting New Zealand as examiner for the Royal Schools of Music, will select the winner, who will be provided with a free passage to Melbourne <o compete against Australian vocalists. The four finalists and the songs they propose to sing are as follows: — Miss Margaret Fox (Hawera), "Thou Monstrous Fiend," from the opera "Fidelio," by Beethoven; and "Sunlight," by Harriet Ware. Miss Audrey Lawson (Wellington), "Oh, Come Do Not Delay," by Mozart; and'"Where the.Bee Sucks," by Dr. Arne. Miss Joan Bovis, of Shannon (Palmerston North), "Angeis n.ver Bright and Fair," from "Theodora," by Handel; and "Gretchen at the Spinning Wheel," by Schubert. Miss Beryl Gough, of Christchurcn (Ashburton), "Come Unto Him," from Handel's "Messiah"; and "Caro No Me," from "Rigoletto," by Verdi. This will be the principal item of an interesting programme, during which the final placings will be decided in the following classes:—Pronunciation test, acrobatic dance, simultaneous dance duo, song and dance (over 14 years), Spanish dance, and eccentric dance. In the Concert Chamber the soprano test solo, recital in character, and English folk song classes will be judged. TODAY'S RESULTS. Results of classes judged today are as follows: — Class 116. Boys' Recitation, 9 and under 12 (20 entries) .—Edwin Lorck (Dannevirke), 86pts. 1; Mervyn Coffey (Petone), 82pts, 2; Brian Barstow (Porirua), 81pts, 3. Boys' Recitation in Character, 12 and under 16 years (9 entries) .—Colin Young (Wellington), 88pts, 1; Murray Todd (Island Bay), 87pts, 2; Kemp Eriksen (Newtown), 76pts, 3. Very highly commended: Jack Shearer (Lower Hutt). "Excellent performances were given by the placed competitors in this section/ said the judge, Mr. J. R. Lester. "The winner's characterisation was convincing and well sustained., As 'Grandfather Smallweed' he looked as though he had stepped off a Dickens plate. The second prize winner has remarkable technique u nd many personal attributes. He is a performer of considerable / talent and very definite promise." Class 190.
