WIN FOR WELLINGTON

CANTERBURY DEFEATED

Most important Sxture of the field day held by the Wellington Hockey Association, at Karori Park, on Saturday, was the representative senior match between Wellington and Canterbury teams, won by Wellington by IS goals to 1. Although, particularly in the first half, the game was even and willingly contested, the Wellington forwards had just enough superiority of combination and finish to give them a decisive advantage. More cohesion in the Canterbury front line, which possessed some fast and capable players, might have given an entirely different aspect to the game.

Penalised for "sticks" the llrst time they got near the Canterbury goal, Wellington were forced to take the defensive. A corner was successfully cleared, and Browne came near to scoring after a rush upflelcl, but play switched round quickly and Prebble, the fast Canterbury winger, got through and scored. Several near Wellington goal shots, including one skied over the bar by Edwards, went astray until eventually, after a skirmish in the circle, Chapman banged a neat angle shot into the net. Canterbury struck a good patch for a time, but Edwards, Browne, and Jackson were combining well, and Browne scored with :i clever flick shot, giving Wellington the advantage at half-time.

Canterbury struck slightly better form at the commencement of the second half, but did not keep it up. Wilson, in Wellington's back line, was a hard man to get past, and on one occasion he took the ball from Prebble and carried it through to Canterbury's 25-yard line before he was stopped. M. Browne scored again for Wellington with a straight shot, although the Canterbury goalie had been doing good work. N. Bowden was one of the best of the Canterbury forwards, and he and others tried hard to make up the leeway towards the end of the game, which concluded with the score unchanged: Wellington 3, Canterbury 1.

The umpires were Messrs. W. Purves (Wellington) and C, Bellamy (Canterbury).
