TWO MILLION MEN
NEWSPAPERS CHANGE TONE

LONDON, August 25,
A message from Rome states that two classes, totalling 500,000 men, have been mobilised, making the total under arms nearly 2,000,000.
Hardly any anti-British feeling is expressed in Italy, even in the newspapers, which publish Mr. Chamberlain's speech in full.
An earlier message states that the Italian Press attacks Mr. Chamberlain's speech, which is described as full of equivocations, deductions, and hyprocrisy, and repeats that a catastrophe can occur at any moment and can be avoided only by Poland backing down.
The Belgian Cabinet has decided on immediate security measures in order "to place the country in a condition of active defence."
Signor Virginio Gayda states that Italy has not exhausted her diplomatic moves to avert war. "Italy," he says, "will continue to operate to the last useful hour for a return to reason and justice."
All Italian ships of the Line are remaining in-port.
The banks have banned the cashing of sterling cheques, fearing that the British banks will not honour them in the event of war.
