MERRITT BOWLS WELL

Both Middlesex and Yorkshire were successful in the latest series of county matches, but Gloucestershire were beaten by Warwickshire. There were some remarkable bowling efforts, including a hat-trick by Dean (Hampshire), four for 7 by Parker (Surrey), and three for 1 by Sinfield (Gloucestershire). Middlesex v. Somerset, at Lord's. — Middlesex, 211 and 359 for eight, declared (Robertson 92, Robins 84;. Somerset, 106 (J. Smith four for 28) and 239. Middlesex won by 225 runs.

Essex .v. Nottinghamshire, at Clacton. —Nottinghamshire, 271 (Hardstatf 117, Nichols five for 34) and 74 .(Fames' five for 30). Essex, 233 (P. Smith 102. Voce five *for 70) and 113 for three, Essex Avon by seven wickets.

Glamorgan v. Surrey, at Swansea.—r Glamorgan, 195 and. 93 (Brown five for 48, Parker four for 7). Surrey, 207 (Matthews six for 56) and 82 for four, Surrey won by six wickets.

Hampshire v. Worcestershire, at Bournemouth. — Worcestershire, 16-1 (Dean four for 38, including the' hattrick) and 190 (King 90; Hill six for 38). Hampshire, 191 and 131 (Martin six for 38). Worcestershire won by 32 runs.

Kent v. Yorkshire, at Dover. —Yorkshire, 438 (Hutton 100). Kent, 109 (Verity four for 32) and, following on, 215 (Chalk not out 115; Verity five for 48). Yorkshire won by an innings and 14 runs.

Northamptonshire v. Lancashire, at Northampton.—Lancashire, 195 (Merritt seven for 83) and 188 (Merritt four for 62). Northamptonshire, 156 (Roberts four for 47) and 132. Lancashire won by 95 runs.

Sussex v. Derbyshire, at Eastbourne. —Derbyshire, 227 and 157 (Nye five for 49). 'Sussex, 423 (Holmes 94; Mitchell, eight for 149). Sussex won by an innings and 39 runs.

Warwickshire v, Gloucestershire, at Birmingham—Warwickshire, 165 (Sinfield, three for 1) and 247 (Dollery 108). Gloucestershire, 187 and 115 (Mayer six for 40). Warwickshire won by 110 runs.
