MELBA SCHOLARSHIP
FOUR RECALLS
The result of the preliminary judging in the Dame Melba Bequest •Scholarship elimination contest (Wellington section), which is one of the principal items on the Wellington Competitions Society's 1939 festival programme, was announced by the judge, Mr. F. A. Bullock, today. One entrant | from Timaru, one from Auckland, and two from Wellington have been selected, and they will sing again tomorrow night, when the winner will be chosen. Three halls are busy today with dancing. vocal, and instrumental classes, all junior. Fourteen classes, covering a wide variety of items, will be disposed of at tonight's evening programme when recalled competitors will be finally placed in the folowing classes:—Action song (12-16). girls' tap dance (under 6).. girls' humorous recitation (12-16), character dance (10-12), simultaneous dance j duo, humorous, musical monologue, operatic dance (14-16), women's humor-j ous recitation, special vocal solo (16-21), i skipping dance (12-14), men's negro | spiritual vocal solo, women's.lrish folk! song, operatic dance (16 and over), and boys' humorous recitation in character j (under 16). Selected competitors from other classes will also appear in the programme. The first demonstration matinee will be held tomorrow afternoon and an j interesting selection from the winners! of completed classes has been made j for the afternoon's entertainment. Other selected competitors will also contribute items. I

Class 43. Girls' Song (14 and under 16). (28 entries.)—Shirley Wilson (Wellington), 85pts. 1; Joan Akers (Lower Hutt), 84pts. 2. Very highly commended: Shirley Austin-Turtle (Wellington). Shirley Boardman (Napier). Highly commended: Shirley Bremner (Lower Hutt), Myra Gray (Lower Hutt), Vera McKelvey (Karori).
Class 53. . Popular Song, boy or girl, under 16 (45 entries) .—Geoffrey Hill (Riccarton), 84 points, 1; Jeffery Stewart (Island Bay), 82 points, 2; Nalda Crawford (Wellington), 80 points, 3. Very highly commended: Betty Capper (Hataitai), Alan Welch (Mangamaire), Beulah Hirst (Masterton). Commended: Craig Elton (Wellington), Harry Fleming (Nelson). "This was an excellent class," said the judge, Mr. Eric Moss. "The best feature of it was the number of children that sang well in tune, which is very unusual in a class of this kind and shows that there will be voices for the future. The prizewinners gave very good perform-
ances."
Class 55. Song in Character, boy or girl. 9 and under 12 years (31 entries). —Natalie Wallace (Wellington), 87 points. 1; Valeric Schofleld (Hastings), 84 points, 2. Very highly commended: Dawn Olsen (Palmerston North), lan Cooper (Napier), Patrene Full (Northland). Highly commended: Lloma Larsen (Lower Hutt), Fay Platt (Hastings), Yvonne Ansin (Napier), Beryl Richardson (Johnsonville), Betty Rowland (Johnsonville), Aylene Boate (Wellington).
Class 69. Dame Melba Bequest Scholarship Elimination Contest (37 entries).—Recalls: Miss Marie Campbell (Timaru), Miss Joan Moody (Auckland), Miss Audrey Lawson (Wellington). Miss Gwynneth Lewis (Wellington). (Recalls will be heard tomorrow night.)
