TENNIS SURPRISE

BROMWICH BEATEN

DAVIS CUP ZONE FINAL

(Received August 25, 11.30 a.m.)

BOSTON, August 24.

The opening singles were shared, when Australia and Yugoslavia met in the inter-zone final of the Davi* Cup lawn tennis competition. Results- are:— A. K. Quist (Australia) beat I* Mitic (Yugoslavia), 6-0, 6-4, 6-3. F. Puncec (Yugoslavia) beat J. Bromwich (Australia), 6-2, 8-6, 0-8, 6-2. Mitic appeared a novice against Quist and was completely outclassed. The captain of the Australian team, H. Hopman, in an interview with the Australian Associated Press, said:— "Puncec's victory was a surprise to us, but illustrated clearly that Bromwicii had not had sufficient forcing practice in first-class singles. Puncec stood on the backline and drove him around at will. This would not have happened if Bromwich had practised against major tournament players. Practices with Sabin, Crawford, or myself were not enough to prepare him against a player of Puncec's versatility. lam trying to arrange for much stiffer competition for which I hope to have Fred Perry. ' "Incidentally, I think Quist will have a better chance against Puncec since he is temperamentally better suited to handle Puncec's forcing game."
