DAY IN PARLIAMENT
BUDGET DEBATE ENDS
Concern over the European crisis found expression in the House of Representatives yesterday, when the Leader of the Opposition (the Hon. Adam Hamilton) reaffirmed the Opposition's assurance that in the event of trouble the Government could look for the unqualified backing of the Opposition. The acting Prime Minister (the Hon. P. Fraser) accepted the offer gratefully when he rose to reply to the Budget debate. That same concern gave a fillip to the debate on the first item on the Estimates, the question of defence being introduced with considerable earnestness. It led Mr. Fraser to detail the steps that would have to be taken if New Zealand had to defend itself. In his reply to the discussion on the Budget the Minister covered the more important points raised by the Opposition, and declared that the Budget had been well received by the country. In addition to disposing of a big j sheaf of answers to questions, the House also passed two Bills, the Property Law Amendment Bill and the Land Transfer Amendment Bill.
