INVERCARGILL MODEL

FOR DOMINION COURT

TECHNICAL SCHOOL EFFORT

The city of Invercargill will be represented in the Dominion Court of the Centennial Exhibition by a model vfhich is apparently unique amongst the models of cities there, because it will have been made by the pupils o£ the Invercargill Technical College, "^icn the suggestion was made to the dhairman of the college board, Mr. J. H. Reed, and the principal of the college, Mr. C. A. Stewart, it was agreed to, and for some months the pupils Have been industriously working on it for certain hours each week. Besides the model of the city there will be one of Bluff Harbour. ° Under the supervision of Mr. R. H. Parker, the art master of the college, the work is proceeding steadily. It has bleen taken up enthusiastically by the b;oys and girls, and it has sharpened their observation faculties to a remarkable degree. One or more pupils are allotted special portions or buildings 6i the city, and it was surprising, before they realised'the exact nature of t&eir task, how little some of them had noted the details of buildings arid features of Invercargill which they passed every day. It is a sort of modelling that needs considerable manual .ability, and apart from that there is a sort of surveying, as' each section or street must be to scale, while tjte finish of the minute buildings, rfiemorials, etc., must be very fine, in view of the display of the model to inquisitive and critical crowds. *. No special equipment has been purohased, but it has been necessary for the pupils to make accessories as aids t|> such minute work. Many of the Isoys and girls come from the surrounding country, and do not reach home ajjain until late in the evening. Perhaps it is having to make the best of unexpected jobs on farms that has given these country pupils initiative, t&it some of them have been helpful iipi solving minor problems. Girl pupils are carrying out their full share of the work. Invercargill, with its spacious layout, lends itself to such a model, but naturally the space that dan be given to it, when so much has ti> be presented in the Dominion Court, if very limited, which makes the de--Iful work more difficult.
