BOWLING

ENGLAND BEAT SCOTLAND

-.The annual international rinks championship was won by 98-84 on July 14 at Lensbury, Teddington, by England against Scotland for the first time since 1929. Five rinks aside were played. On the first day England beat Ireland by 111-89, but they had to thank two rinks only for the results, the other three rinks being down by a few shots. The defeat by 23-16 of G. W. A. Wright, with his Hampshire rink, viz., K. I. Cross (who played as a Wellington Club member in New Zealand last season), C. E. Nanson, and A. K. Cochrane, was not expected, as the combination was regarded as a strong one. England and Wales provided a great bowling treat before a record crowd, who saw England win by 104-79 in a finish which at one time threatened to repeat the Welsh defeat of Ireland. England played well to a man. Wright's I rink was up by 22-12. The other outstanding English rink was J. Paterson's. In the final game against Scotland, England had things in their favour from the start, .winning by 98-84. Here again, however, only two of the English rinks were ahead, Wright by 26-10 and J. Paterson (Surrey ( by 28-17. In the London "Times's" preliminary article on the meeting it was stated that Cross, the present English singles holder, as a lead had no equal in these games. This was Cross's third appearance as an international lead. Since his return to England, as already reported, he has won the Eastbourne tournament singles. Messrs. C. O. Josephson (Hataitai) and W. N. Parton (Wellington) were spectators at the international games.
