DESERTED WIVES

PROVISION SOUGHT

Better provision for deserted wives was suggested in a question asked by Mr. J. O'Brien (Government, Westland) in the House of Representatives yesterday. Mr. O'Brien asked the acting Minister of Social Security (the Hon. W. E. Parry) if he would bring down an amendment to the Social Security Act this session so as to allow a deserted wife to draw a deserted wife's benefit for herself and her children under the age of sixteen years. "There is no necessity to amend the Social Security Act for the purpose mentioned," Mr. Parry replied, "as ample provision already exists to meet cases of the kind outlined by the hon. member. The measure of assistance that may be granted will depend, of course, upon the family responsibilities and resources of the applicant."
