NORTH ISLAND TITLES

Played at the Boys' Institute the 1939 North Island table tennis championships were, with the exception of the combined doubles, concluded at an early hour this morning. Of the four major titles, . Auckland, Wellington, Hutt Valley, and Manawatu each secured one, Mesdames Ingham and Valk (Hutt Valley) being the only holders of titles (women's doubles) who retained them. E. J. Hughes, holder of the men's title, was beaten in straight sets by another Hutt Valley player, S. Henderson. In the ladies' singles Miss Liaura Hughes (Palmerston North). 1938 NewZealand lady champion, beat Miss Betty Strang (Hutt Valley) in a stirring threeset match. The men's singles final was won by the Aucklander C. Burke, who beat the New Zealand representative E. Boniface. This result was a surprise as it was the first time that Burke had defeated Boniface. H. D. Kennedy and L. Wilson won the men's doubles title after a hard five-set match against F. Paton and C. Burke, of Auckland.

For his fourth offence of drunkenness, John Joseph Corby, a ship's fireman, was fined £1. in default seven days' imprisonment, by Mr. J. L. Stout. S.M.. in the Magistrate's Court today. For his second offence of drunken ness Thomas Arthur Crook, a labourer 3nd fireman, was fined 10s. in default 4S hours' imprisonment. I
