AUDITOR-GENERAL
RETIRING THIS MONTH
44 YEARS' SERVICE
The Controller and Auditor-General, Mr. J. H, Fowler, will retire from his position at the end of this month, having completed 44 years' service. Mr. Fowler has spent the whole of his-? official career in the Department of£ which he eventually became the head.; iHe succeeded the late Colonel G. F., IC. Campbell as Controller and AuditorGeneral in March, 1937. Mr. Fowler is the fifth Controller and Auditor-General to hold office. He has served under his four predecessors,
each of whom was appointed from outside the Department. Mr. Fowler, who was born at Blenheim in 1878, received his early educa- ' tion at the Blenheim Sichool. There he won a MarlborougYi Scholarship entitling him to two years' tuition at Nelson College, where be won another scholarship which enabled him to remain at the college a third year. He passed the junior and senior Civil Service examinations, and in 1895 joined the Audit Office^ as a cadet. He was at head office fcrr seven years, [after which he went "to Auckland as lan audit inspector. Mr. Fowler had 1 20 years of inspectorial work, and during that period served in almost all parts of New Zealand. In 1922 he | was appointed chief clerk, chief audit inspector, and Deputy Controller and Auditor-General. j Mr. Fowler has been a member of the New Zealand Society of Accountants since its formation. He is vicepresident of the V/ellington Football Club and has heltd this office for several years.
