IN FIFTH DAY
LARGE CLASSES
This is the fifth day of the Wellington Competitions Society's annual festival. This morning three halls were engaged with dancing, vocal and elocu- | tionary competitors. Tfie numbers of • entries in several of the junior classes '.judged today were very large. In one lof the junior elocution sections the judge had to hear 56 competitors, and one of the vocal classes attracted 43 children. A wide variety of amateur talent will be heard at the concert programme in the Town Hall tonight. Recalled competitors will be finally placed in the following classes: —Operatic dance (under 6), girls' tap dance (8-10), piano solo (under 12). boys' tap dance (under 12), clog dance (12-14). and poetic or classic barefoot dance (12-14). For the remainder of the programme a good selection has been made from various classes. In the Concert Chamber the final batch of entrants in the Dame Melba Bequest Scholarship elimination contest will be heard. Four recalls will then be announced by the judge. Mr. F. A. Bullock, and they will sing again on Saturday night when one of the four will be selected to compete later against contestants selected in other parts of New Zealand. TODAY'S RESULTS. Classes judged today resulted as follows:— Class 42. Girds' Song, 16 and under 18 (13 entries).—Miss Margaret Milne (Lower Hutt), 83pts, 1; Miss Thelma Halvorsen (Wellington), 82pts.. 2. Highly commended: Miss Doreen Calvert (Wellington). Commended: Miss Jean Purvis (Kelburn). Class 49. Sacred Song, Boy or Girl, 12 and under 16 years (43 entries). — Warwick Keen (Lower Hutt), 87 points, 1; Geoffrey Hill (Riccarton), 85 points, 2. Very highly commended: Robert Crichton (Lower Hutt). Highly commended: Harry Fleming (Nelson). Shirley Wilson (Wellington). Commended: |Beulah Hirst (Masterton), Jeffery | Stewart (Island Bay). Betty Paynter | (Wellington), Shirley Brenmer (Lower JHutt). ! Class 61. Action Song, 12 and under I 16. in Costume (18 entries).—Recalls: | Geoffrey Hill (Riccarton). Jeffery | Stewart (Island Bay). Very highly commended: Shirley Wilson (Wellington), Beulah Hirst (Masterton). Highly commended: Betty Paynter (Wellington). Shirley Boardman (Napier), Jean Rimmer (Wallaceville).
