BROADCAST OF MOUSE
FALSE IMPRESSIONS
REMINDER TO MEMBERS
A gentle reminder to members in! general that the proceedings of the i House were being broadcast was given ; by Mr. T. <D. Burnett (National, Temuka), when speaking in the Financial Debate in the House of Representatives yesterday. While they all agreed that the decorum and dignity of the House were in proper hands, said Mr. Burnett, referring to the Speaker (the Hon. W. E. Barnard), he had found that most of the people listening in to the speeches had a false impression of the way the business of the House was carried on. He had recently been absent from the House for four sitting days, and one wet afternoon he turned on the wireless and was amazed to think of the false impression he would have got if he had not been a member of Parliament. The proceedings sounded like a Donnybrook fair, and he was taken back forty years. He was reminded of an up-country race meeting and every minute, lie expected to hear a shout of "A bob in." "This is a deliberative body," Mr. Burnett added, "and we don't want anyone to turn on the wireless for a cheap variety show."
