TRAFFIC LIGHTS
WAKEFIELD STREET
SET
PROVISION FOR WALKERS
Though not included in the original lay-out, special "cross now" lights have been included in the new traffic control lights at the Wakefield-Tara-naki Streets intersection on the main line of pedestrian traffic, along Wakefield Street, and should add to pedestrian safety and street crossing comfort. The lights have been given a first trial and will be given another run later this week, probably on Thursday, before being put into operation next week. The arrangement of islands in Jervois Quay and in Taranaki Street is a long step ahead of the standard safety zones set up at other city intersections, and, being much more noticeable, should serve as a constant reminder to drivers and walkers that there are traffic and crossing rules. The division of the roadway, primarily to keep traffic to clear lines so that it will pass over the pads which control the light changes, will also add to pedestrian safety in that definite waiting zones are established. The lights and the zones were set out in Taranaki Street and in Jervois Quay to make for road safety. They cost quite a sum of money. It is up to everyone who uses the intersection to justify that outlay by using them properly.
