A NEW PHASE
ATTENTION DIVERTED
DANZIG TO POLAND
GERMAN AREAS LOST . IN WAR
(By Telegraph—Press Association. —Copyright.) (Received August 21, 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, August 20. Despite a weekend lull in diplomatic activities, signs are increasingly visible that the European situation is again approaching a critical piiase. Attention is being diverted from Danzig to Poland. The Berlin correspondent of "The Times" says that the Danzig problem has yielded to far larger issues which have suddenly arisen between Germany and Poland, and that the whole question of the German territories which were lost to Poland as a result of the Great War is being revived, and the plight of the German minority in Poland drawn attention to. Polish Upper Silesia is rich in coal and heavily industrialised, and it is declared that this area must be brought back to the Reich in accordance with the principle of self-determination. The correspondent says that the belief that Herr Hitler's plans will soon be executed is gathering strength. Large-scale military activities continue unobtrusively. Every able-bodied man in East Prussia has been called up and farmhouses and carts commandeered. Women have left the farms for the towns. The impressment of vehicles is proceeding elsewhere in Germany, ostensibly for the approaching motorised manoeuvres.
