CLEVER MAORIS
Two clever Maoris, Hema and Te Hana, in the five-eighth line, a thoroughly promising half-back, Blenkhorn, and exciting moments of play, especially towards the end, made the curtain-raiser at Athletic Park on Saturday between Horowhenua juniors, the winners by 13 points to 12, and Wellington third grade reps, one of the best of its kind for some time. Horowhenua had the advantage in weight and secured most of the ball, and Blenkhorn fed his two Maoris, who quite captured the crowd with their dasthy sidestep and resourcefulness. But Wellington were always fighting back, and some good penalty kicks by Tc Punga in the second half steadily reduced the gap between (lie teams. Millburnc and Hoy were two grand fighters In the Wellington forwards, but Logan, at second five-eighths, tried to cut in too often. Young, Rori, und Chane.v wero good ones in a fine, bustling Horowhenua pack, and Galloway, at centre three-quarter, completed an inside back line of unusual strength. Tries for Horowhenua were scored by Chancy. Galloway, and Gordon, Galloway converting two. MillbuWe and Shute scored for Wellington, and Te Punga kicked two penalties. Mr.' A. Ramsay was referee.
