CABLE BROKEN

MIDDLE OF COOK STRAIT

TELEPHONIC DELAYS LIKELY

The Postmaster-General (the Hon. F. Jones) advises that a four-core cable, part of the communication system between the North and South Islands, has broken at a point estimated to be midway in Cook Strait.

Mr. Jones said that the Department was in communication with Cable and Wireless Ltd. with a view to obtaining the services of a cable repair ship. It is likely, however, that some months will elapse before a ship can be made available and repairs effected. In the meantime, the complement of telegraphic channels between the two islands is not affected, but the number of toll circuits for inter-island telephone communication has been reduced from ten to six. As a result, it is probable that requests for interisland telephone communication will be subject to delay.
