MATERNITY HOME

TAXED ACCOMMODATION

MEANS TEST TO BE APPLIED

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

ASHBURTON, August 14,

After a long discussion in committee on the overcrowding at the Malvern Maternity Home, the Ashburton Hospital Board resolved that a means test be initiated as from the next meeting if it is found that in the next month the position regarding accommodation is not relieved.

It was pointed out that this amounted to a capacity test rather than a means test.

Dr. Wells, chairman of the committee that reported on the matter, said that following the introduction of the social security benefits prospective patients had transferred from private nursing homes to Malvern. The alternative to the means test would be provision for another 50 or 60 patients.
