RADIO SERVICE

MUSICK MEMORIAL CENTRE

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

AUCKLAND, August 10.

Manned by a small staff of operators, the short-wave apparatus installed at the Mvisick Memorial Radio Centre at Tamaki is now undergoing tests in readiness for the inauguration of point-to-point service with Sydney.

It is expected that communication with the Australian station at Rose Bay will be established within a few days, and the way will then be paved for the exchange of information between New Zealand and Australian aviation meteorologists.

Though the transmitter will be in charge of a technician, both receiving and transmission will be carried out from the building housing the receiver, the two stations being connected by an underground cable.

The installation of direction-finding equipment, which is housed in a separate building, has also been completed, but a lengthy and exacting task is involved in the calibration of sensitive instruments to ensure accuracy.

The erection of a medium-wave transmitter will be carried out shortly, and, when this task is completed, facilities will be provided for the operation of a radio telephone service with trans-ocean aircraft. Till the plant is available use can be made of medium-wave equipment established at Mangere for the internal airways system.
