HUNDREDS OF TREES

PLANTED

Schoolchildren in Lower Hutt planted 475 trees, principally puriri and pohutukawa, and including a hundred scarlet gums. The trees were planted in Lincoln Avenue, Sherwood, Craddock, Nile, Jutland, Collingwood, Vincent, Guthrie, Grenville, and Rodney Streets, and Wainui and Bell Roads, by pupils from Boulcott, Central, Waterloo, Eastern Hutt, Convent, Waiwhetu, and Randwick Schools, and the Hutt High School. Addresses were delivered to the various groups of children by Dr. B. J. Dudley, the Rev. H. Peat, Councillors J. Mitchell and A. Marshall, and Messrs. J. S. Barton, Wm. Smith, W. V. Dyer, and W. H. Wilson. The main ceremony in Petone was held in the afternoon, when sycamores were planted along the eastern side of the North Park by pupils of the schools in the Petone district. The children were addressed by the Mayor of Petone, Mr. G. London, who emphasised the value of trees and the respect in which they should be held. In the morning, separate ceremonies were held at, the Petone West and Korokoro Schools. Apart from those planted yesterday, 13,000 trees have been planted this year alone by the Petone Borough. The planting completes a block started about five years ago, which contains between 40,000 and 60,000 trees. . At Upper Hutt some hundreds of trees, including silver birch, flowering cherries, and various foliage trees showing autumn tints, were planted by school pupils under the superintendence of the Mayor and a number of councillors, in Martin and Arino Streets and in Whiteman's Valley Road, also in Maidstone Park and in the grounds of the Upper Hutt, Trentham, and Silverstream Schools. Yesterday afternoon the pupils of the Hutt Valley High School met in the assembly hall and were addressed by the chairman of the Board of Governors, Mr. D. A. Ewen, the Mayor, Mr. J. W. Andrews, the principal, Mr. J. N. Millard. Mr. E. Hutt, Director of Reserves, was also present. After the gathering, the company proceeded to the front of the school, where a number of trees were planted. The boys of standards 5 and 6 of the Muritai School met in the afternoon at Muritai Park/where they were addressed by the Mayor, Mr. E. W. Wise, and Councillor D. Bowie, and planted trees In the park. _______
