A squad of the Papal Gendarmerie, under.'the command of an officer, has been allotted special duty as Customs guards in the Vatican City. Their duty is to supervise the traffic leaving the precincts, and. to ensure that there-is no smuggling; out of foreign -, goods which are imported for the use.of the Vatican population and thus.avoid the duty levied by the Italian Government.
A North of England fishwife has received a gold medal from the Duke of. Kent for collecting £300 for the hospitals in six years.
