A DEADLOCK

NATIONAL REGISTER

CONFERENCE AT MELBOURNE

MELBOURNE, July 22

The conference concerning the national register between the Federal Prime Minister, Mr. Menzies, and the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. Curtin, which opened yesterday, was continued today and then adjourned till Monday. I-i is understood that a deadlock has been reached.

The Prime Minister declined to indicate whether the Government would yield ground on the unions' request for a Legislative assurance that the register records will not be used for industrial conscription.

Political circles believe that Mr. Menzies will decline to bargain with the unions for observance of the law.
