HIGHLAND GATHERING

DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIPS

During the course of the Centennial Exhibition in Wellington it is intended to hold a Highland gathering, when Dominion championships in every branch of national dancing and piping will be competed for. Never before inNew Zealand's history has such a gathering been held, the practice being to allot these championships among the various sports organisations throughout New Zealand. The proposal was discussed at the annual meeting of the Wellington centre of the Piping and Dancing Association of New Zealand on Saturday evening, and f* 1 uy was reached on the matter of the championship programme and the prize moneys to be given. Piping.—All-comers, any age or sexPxobaireachd, marches, slow marches strathspeys and reels, jigs and hornpipes; prizes £10, £5, £3 £2 each event;, entry fee, 10s each event. The Lawrie shield also carries a special pipe chanter, with ivory sole presented by Lawrie and Co., Glasgow' Dancing.—Boys and girls of 12, years Of age and^ under 16 years: Highland fling sword dance, seann triubhais, Highland reel, Reel o' Tulloch, Irish jig and sailor's hornpipe, also sword dance and sailor's hornpipe for boys only of same age; prizes, £2, £1, and 10sentry fee, 2s each event

In : addition to the foregoing championshjp events there will be Srdinarv piping events, for junior grade mue'rs comprising slow marches, marches', strathspeys, and reels, and one event for. novices (march); prizes, £3 £2 and £1; entry fee, 3s each event Dancing events will also be provided for children under 12 years of age the items being Highland fling, sword dance, seann triubhais, Irish jig, sailor's hornpipe (any sex), and Highland fling and sword dance for boys, and in addition, a Highland fling for novices only; prizes for each'event, £1 10s and ss; entry fee is. . .

Entries will close on January 6, 1940 and the suggested dates for the gathering are January 23 and 24, 1940
