NEW BRIDGE OPENED

Constructed of reinforced concrete at a cost of £9588 and replacing a 71----years-old wooden suspension structure, Mataura's new modern single span bridge in the centre of the township was opened by the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple) today it. the presence of Southland members of Parliament, representatives of local bodies, and several hundreds of people, including Mrs. James Sinclair, of Oamaru, who was present at the opening of the old bridge in 1868. ] A fine of £2, in default seven days' imprisonment, was imposed upon Vivian Leslie Fizelle, a labourer, aged 25, who appeared before Mr. J. L. j Stout, S.M., today, charged with a breach of a prohibition order. He was convicted and fined 10s, in default 48 hours' imprisonment, for a second statutory offence of drunkenness, and for committing mischief by wilfully damaging a cell utensil, valued at 6s 4d, he was convicted and ordered to make .good the damage.
