DAVIS CUP DOUBLES
PAIRS TESTED OUT
AUSTRALIAN & AMERICAN
(Received July 22, 10.30 ajn.)
BOSTON, July 21
Considerable interest was expressed in tennis circle's when it became known that the Australian Davis Cup players A. K. Quist and J. H. Crawford intend to play in the doubles in the Seabright tournament next week, although Quist may not play in the singles. C. G. Mako and F. Parker and G. Mulloy and J. H. Doeg, who are competing in the doubles in the present Longwood Bowl tournament here, are considered "experimental teams" which the American Davis Cup committee are testing out. These combinations are also expected to compete at Seabright, .as well as E. T. Cooke arid R. L. Biggs, the Wimbledon champions, j It is felt, that the fact that the manager of the Australian team, H. Hopman, is sending Quist.and Crawford into various eastern matches as a doubles pair against combinations from which the American doubles team will be chosen shows that he is fairly definitely determined to name Quist and Crawford a*, the doubles pair for the impending most important Davis Cup contests. Despite the fact that he used Quist and Bromwich earlier in the North American season, it is felt that only a bad showing by Quist and Crawford here and at Seabright will make Hopman revert to the Quist and Bromwich combination. Riggs, on his return from Wimbledon, in a statement to the Press said that he and Cooke will attempt to obtain the doubles berth in the Davis Cup team, but he declined to predict the outcome of the challenge round. "Australia has got a pretty good team," he added.
