STRONG NORTHERLY WINDS
Special forecast for Wellington:—
Strong north-westerly winds. Some rain probable, but weather for the most part fair. Moderate temperatures.
The forecast for the Dominion as a whole issued by the Meteorological Office at noon today, is for winds varying between north-west and southwest, but with north-westerlies predominating in eastern districts and about Cook Strait; force light to moderate at first, but becoming strong at tunes in exposed positions south of New Plymouth and Napier. The weather will be changeable in western districts and in the far north and south, with rain at times, some heavy falls probable in Westland, mainly fair east of the ranges, but with showers extending later to Otago and Canterbury. Temperatures will be cool in the south and moderate in the north. The anticyclone is moving away eastwards, and the first of a series of westerly depressions was very close to t~e South Island this morning. Winds yesterday were light and variable with northerlies predominating over Otago but between south-easterlies and southwesterlies over the remainder of the Dominion. This morning wind directions were still rather variable, but north-westerlies or westerlies were gradually predominating south of Cape Egmont and East Cape, and freshening about Cook Strait The weather yesterday was fine but with some scattered showers in some coastal areas K)f the North Island, § points being re- J corded at Cape Maria Van Diemen, and 7 points at Cape Palliser. Last night rain commenced in and west of the j Southern Alps, with scattered showers; in western districts of the North Island. Cape Egmont had 11 points, and Greymouth and Puysegur Point 35 points. Temperatures were cold with widespread frosts. In Auckland the weather was fine and cool, with a light south-westerly breeze. Some isolated showers were j reported early this morning, but the weather was still fair, the rainfall only amounting to 2 points. The maximum temperature was 51.4 degrees, and the minimum 40.4 degrees. Wellington had a fair day except for- a few scattered light showers in the eastern suburbs during the morn ing. Five hours of sunshine were recorded. The light southerly breeze which persisted throughout yesterday decreased during the evening, and this morning there was a fresh north-west-erly. Last night was fine with a moderate fog, and this morning clear and frosty. Temperatures were cool, the maximum 46.6 degrees, 'and the minii> urn 35.2 degrees. Christchurch had clear weather and a light south-westerly breeze. Tern peratures were very cold and there was a frost of 14 degrees last night This morning the wind had become a light northerly and the sky was cloudy The maximum temperature was 45.4 degrees, and the minimum 28.9 degrees. The weather was sunny and calm tn Dunedin yesterday. This morning the sky was cloudy, anc there was a light northerly breeze. Temperatures have been cold and a frost occurred again this morning.
