SIX OAK CHAIRS

FOR EAST GIRLS' COLLEGE

Six oak platform chairs for the Batham Assembly Hall at the Wellington East Girls' College were handed over to the Board of Governors of the college after the school assembly on Thursday. The chairs were donated by friends of the school, and were designed and carved by Mr. E. C. Isaac, to conform with the carved lectern and ceremonial chair he had already made and presented to the college. Mr. W. F. Stock, president of the college Parents' Association, which was instrumental in obtaining the promises of the chairs, announced the names of the donors, and Nancy Langford, the head prefect, removed the flags covering the chairs, which were then formally presented by their donors.

The Minister of Education (the Hon. P. Fraser) was the first donor to speak and was applauded when he took his seat in the chair he had just presented on behalf of Mrs. Fraser and himself. Mrs. Fraser sat next to him in the chair donated by Mr. L. McKenzie. The next to speak and to sit in the chair she had donated was Mrs. Knox. Gilmer. Mr. T. Hills, president of the Parents' Association of the Wellington Girls' College, conveyed greetings from that school and took his seat in the chair donated by the association. Mr. Isaac presented and sat in the chair donated by Mr. W. H. P. Marsdon, who sent an apology for absence. The sixth chair, presented by Mr. and Mrs. Stock, was occupied by Mr. Stock after he had asked the acceptance by the board of all six chairs.

Mr. L. McKenzie, chairman of the Board of Governors, accepted the chairs, and called on Miss Batham, the first principal, to join with him in acknowledging the gifts. Miss N. G. Isaac, the present principal, also spoke. Among those present were Mrs. Knox Gilmer, Mr. W. H. Field, and Mr. W. V. Dyer, members of the board, Mrs. Dyer, Mr. Whyte, and Mr. Asquith, secretaries of the Wellington East and Wellington Girls' College Parents' Associations.
