ESPERANTO
The weekly meeting, of the Wellington Esperanto Club, welcomed Mr.. W. Upchurch, a member of the Ohakune Esperanto Club, who has been transferred to Wellington. Mr. Upchurch' said that although the Ohakune group was a small'1 one, the members were very enthusiastic, -travelling up to 20 miles in order to attend the weekly meetings. The president, Mr. E. A. Hornblow, announced that the marriage of two members of the club, Mr. J. Major and Miss Eve Schwartz, both recently arrived from Hungary, took place during the week, a reception in their honour being held at the residence of the Misses Smythsqn, After the tuition hour an interesting series of original two-act plays was presented, Ihe authors in each case taking the leading roles. Messrs. G. Blong and J. Allan presented "La Estro" ("The Boss"). "La Edzino ("The Wife") was ably performed by Mr. and Mrs. D. Kirk, and Messrs. F. A. Bailey and L. Jowers; and "La Fajfanta Vagisto" ("The Whistling Tramp") was presented by Messrs. C. Toomer, G. Blong, P. Mcßea, and J. L. McAlistcr. Mr James E. ■'Wells, who presided at the weekly meeting of "La Esperantista Kuitura- Rondo de Miramar," reported that satisfactory progress had been made since the inception of the culture circle. Esperanto only had been used at these meetings, arid all had profited from the Esperanto conversation, games, and essay writing. Miss Joyc Sutherland was elected chairman of the evening, which opened with the singing of popular songs in Esperanto, Mr. Bertram Potts officiating at the piano. Several Esperanto games were played. For a quarter of an hour members wrote short essays on music, the papers to be handed back next week with corrections and suggestions, where necessary. Word-building followed, and brief points of grammar were explained. After supper general conversation in Esperanto terminated a profitable evening. Miss Joye Sutherland was hostess.
