ON SOCIAL SECURITY
"KNOCKING ROUND HOTELS"
"You should be ,ashamed of yourself knocking round hotels when you are on Social Security—that is all I have got to say to you, young man," said Mr. W. F. Stilwell, S.M., to Thomas Morgan, who pleaded guilty in the Magistrate's Court today, to a charge of refusing to leave licensed premises when requested. Sub-Inspector D. J. O'Neill, prosecuting, said that at 6 p.m. on June 24 the defendant was in the bar of a hotel in Cuba Street. ' Pie demanded a drink, but the barman refused to serve him on account of his age, and also the fact that he was showing signs of intoxication. The manager requested him to leave, but he adopted a threatening attitude and refused to go, with the result that a constable was called. In the presence of the constable the manager again ordered him to leave, but he refused, and he also refused to go when the constable asked him to do so. He was eventually ejected, and later tried to come back into the hotel again. Morgan said that he had put down money for a drink and was not given his change back. He had told the constable that he was waiting for his change. A fine of £1 was imposed, and the accused, applying for time to pay, said that he was on Social Security.
