ENGINE IN SLIP

NAPIER EXPRESS

TRAIN CREW WERE ON LOOK-OUT

(Special to the "Evening Post.")

PALMERSTON N., This Day,

Further information concerning the slip which brought the Napier-Welling-ton express to a stop in the Manawatu Gorge yesterday reveals that the spoil packed itself down from the hillside against the engine as the train was about to pass the spot. No damage was done save the shattering of the window glass on the drivex-'s side by a bouncing rock, but the slip was considered of sufficient size to derail one or more carriages had the train not been brought to a stop so promptly by the driver. Mr. Ben Johnson.

Owing to ihe earlier bad weather the engine crew was keeping a good look-out. The most alarming aspect of the slip was that large rocks were continuing to fall during the wait for the second engine from Woodville. There was no panic but a feeling of uncertainty as passengers watched boulders leap across the engine into the river below.
