WALLPAPER MAPS

It is stated, by a dealer in old maps that his goods are in great and increasing request by decorators and private persons- as substitutes for wallpapers and screen designs, says the "Manchester Guardian." Old maps of the Home: Counties and the West Country are said to be in special demand, for no ascertainable reason. The fashion is at any rate a little more sensible than the recent feminine fad for. having designs from eighteenth-century maps used for walking-out gowns, shawls, evening wraps, and even pyjamas. To stare at a map on a wall is rational enough, but to sleep on one seems to be quite devoid of common sense. At first sight the connoisseur of maps might say that the wallpaper demand would be a godsend for cartographers wishing to dispose of modern maps outmoded by Messrs. Hitler, Mussolini, and Co. But there is a snag. Not only are the older maps, ,with their Neptunes, ships in full sail, and decorative curlicues, much better to look at, but the "bright, clear mineral colours" of the old mapmakers cannot be—or-at any rate are not—equalled by modern manufacturers.
